Fat transfer — in technical terms autologous fat grafting or lipofilling — is a plastic surgery procedure in which the body's own fat is harvested from a donor area such as the abdomen, hip or thigh, processed and re-injected at the desired site. At the Ästhetik am Isartor practice in Munich we carry out the procedure under the medical direction of Dr. Fabian Weinschenk. The procedure has three steps: gentle fat harvesting by micro-liposuction, processing by centrifugation, and targeted injection with fine cannulas. Because only the body's own tissue is used, foreign substances and the risk of allergy do not arise. Part of the transplanted fat is resorbed by the body (typically 30 to 50 per cent); the part that has taken hold is retained long term once healing is complete. Fat transfer is used in three regions: at the breast for scar-sparing volume increase, in the face to build up the cheeks, temples and chin, and at the back of the hand for rejuvenation. The final result stabilises after three to six months.
